This piece was based on a painting by one of my favorite artists, J.W. Waterhouse (Hylas and the Nymphs). I really wanted to take Waterhouse's painting and remaster it with my own style of painting. I also thought it appropriate to use different faces for each nymph rather than all the same, as it is in his work. I have often thought this painting to be a mini series, but I have only finished these two paintings and have moved on to other endeavors.
Just a side note: Nymphs are female spiritual beings from Greek Mythology who embody different landscapes (land, water, plants, celestial etc.) Most are thought to be exceptionally beautiful, but they can be both friendly or treacherous . . . so, taking that plunge may cost you your life. I think of this as a way of showing both the depth and shallowness of external beauty. It can be so gorgeous yet is tragic when it is taken to idolization.
